The Difference between Zakat and Charity: What Every Muslim Should Know

Charity is a major part and component of a Muslim’s financial worship along with Zakat, but it differs in the function it serves and the rules under which it operates. In understanding the nature of each of these practices, a believer will always distinguish between the voluntary generosity of one’s own heart and the mandatory act of giving to Allah and society through Zakat.

What Is Zakat?

Zakat is an obligatory form of worship and one of the 5 Pillars of Islam, which must be paid annually based on “savings,” “gold,” or “silver” once reaching the nisab and held for one year. Most types of Zakat have a set rate (2.5%). Due to its prescribed rate and structure, Zakat is therefore not randomized giving (i.e., discretionary) but rather the obligation of believers as determined by Allah.

The Qur’an identifies eight categories of individuals who qualify for Zakat payments: the poor, the needy, those in debt, and those who are lost or unable to travel due to hardships. Zakat payments must go specifically to these categories of people. As Zakat payments are a requirement from Allah, withholding them purposely from those people is considered a sin and unjust to the underprivileged who are entitled by Allah to a portion of the wealth of the upper class.

What Is Charity (Sadaqah)?

Sadaqah, or charity, is voluntary and can be performed any time, in any amount, with the intention of pleasing Allah and assisting fellow Muslims. Sadaqah does not have to be a monetary donation; food, education, kind words, and eliminating an obstacle in the street/sidewalk are all acts considered Sadaqah when intended sincerely.

Unlike the Zakat system, where donations must adhere to a set percentage of a person’s income and a specific group of recipients, voluntary charity is open to whoever the donor chooses to help (e.g., family, friends, neighbors, local projects, and worldwide assistance). The ability of Sadaqah donations to be made at any time allows for rapid response to catastrophic events (e.g., natural disasters, medical emergencies) and significant financial difficulties that will arise throughout the year, even after a person’s annual Zakat has been given and allocated.

Key Differences Between Zakat and Charity

One of the primary differences between Zakat and Sadaqah is that Zakat is mandatory, while Sadaqah is encouraged but not required. The act of giving a large amount of Sadaqah does not absolve the donor of their responsibility to accurately calculate their Zakat and distribute it according to the rules of the Zakat system; the giver must indicate that their donation is being given as Zakat to fulfill the required obligation.

Zakat and charity are also different because Zakat is a form of wealth purification for specific categories of wealth that have been designated to receive zakat and can only be used for eligible recipients of zakat; while charity can be used to support a variety of causes, including mosques, schools, breaking ground on wells, or as a personal gift. Zakat is typically given once a year after carefully calculating the amount; however, sadaqah may be given on a daily, weekly, or spontaneous basis throughout one’s life to maintain an individual’s feelings of generosity.

Importance of Zakat and Charity

In addition to the spiritual implications of giving Zakat and sadaqah, these methods help people grow together as a community by providing support for community programs and responding to emergency situations through charitable acts demonstrating kindness and empathy toward others.

From a spiritual standpoint, both Zakat and sadaqah protect one from attachment to worldly possessions, thus helping to achieve greater peace and serenity in this life. When Muslims understand the proper relationship between Zakat and sadaqah and consistently apply both methods of giving, they develop an understanding of Allah’s intention for wealth to be used in His service, resulting in the spiritual cleansing of their wealth and the development of spiritually connected communities based on fairness, compassion, and mutual support.
