Narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Whoever fasts during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven." (Imam Bukhari).
The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is the month when Muslims worldwide observe fasting to please Allah (SWT). During this month, the gates of heaven are opened whilst those of hell are closed and the devil is chained.
The month of Shaban precedes Ramadan and is the ideal time for Muslims to prepare for this blessed month, both physically and spiritually. Here are a few tips to help you out.
Shaban - Seek Repentance
Do not wait until Ramadan is already knocking at your door. A Muslim should always repent for his sins. Allah (SWT) is indeed the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful. Pray to Allah (SWT) to cleanse your body of previous sins and evil acts, keep you away from misdeeds, protect you, and bless you during this incredibly rewarding month. Repentance and supplication help one build a stronger bond with the Almighty and attain Taqwa.
Observe Regular Prayer
If you do not offer prayers five times daily, it is important to start doing so now. Serve the obligatory prayers at their due times in congregation not only to become a good Muslim but also to invoke a positive sense of community in brotherhood, punctuality, and obviously get into the habit of doing so during Ramadan. If you are not in the habit of offering Naf’l prayers, start doing so during Shaban so you can maintain this habit in Ramadan.
Abandon Bad Habits
Fasting during Ramadan cleanses the soul. Before this month starts, avoid movies or TV shows that display profanity or vulgarity. Restrict the amount of time you spend on social media as these apps tend to engage a large portion of our time that can be spent in Dhik’r, Salah or reciting Quran. Smoking is prohibited during the fast. Try to quit this bad habit to make fasting easier and more enjoyable for you.
Shaban Observe Compensatory Fasts
If for any reason, you happened to miss fasts during the last Ramadan, observe compensatory fasts in Shaban. This will help your body get accustomed to fasting and also make up for the fasts you missed the previous year.
Make good use of this month by fasting, doing charity, and repenting for past sins for Ramadan is the month of countless blessings.
