What is Pilgrimage?
Pilgrimage (Hajj in Arabic) is the fifth pillar of Islam. It consists of a visit to Mecca where a Muslim needs to spend five days and perform different rituals. Hajj was first performed by Prophet Ibrahim (A.S), and the coming generations continued this ritual in one form or the other until Islam resurrected to its right spirit. It is an obligatory ritual for those who are able-bodied and can bear the expenses.
Hajj –From a Believer’s Perspective
Being an obligation for the people following Islam, Hajj is a sacred journey with unprecedented importance like any other farz. Still, there are many attractions for a Muslim in this blessed activity. The Hajj is seen as a chance to wipe clean past sins and start fresh. A believer feels a close association with the city of Mecca, Medina and other places one visits during Hajj. This is the reason why the Iman of the Muslim visitor replenishes. Kaabah is the Islam's most sacred site because it represents the metaphorical house of Allah SWT. The presence of millions of fellow during Hajj strengthens the feeling of Muslim Brotherhood and deepens the faith.
Hajj for American Muslims
No matter where they belong or live from around the world, the importance of pilgrimage for all the Muslims is equal. It is their wish of a lifetime to visit Mecca at least once and perform Hajj to attain nearness to Allah SWT. The American Muslims are no different in this regard. According to a survey, more than 84 % of American Muslims declared pilgrimage to Mecca to be of importance to them. Every year, thousands of American Muslims visit Mecca to perform Hajj.
Significance for Muslims outside the Muslim World
It is customary to realize that leading one’s life according to the teachings of Islam in true spirit is much easier in an Islamic society and a Muslim country. For the locale where Muslims are in the minority, or the law and legislature do not offer enough protection for Muslims, especially when they are worshipping, it takes more effort and concentration to keep your connection with Allah SWT. In such circumstances, the importance of Hajj manifolds as it helps to remind them about their real purpose on Earth. It lets them feel a closer connection to Allah SWT by uniting them with their brothers and sisters on the journey, which causes them to find their humility and help them reinforce worship methods.
